When travelling or living abroad, people encounter some situations that they may find surprising, even shocking. This phenomenon is known as culture shock. It is a state of discomfort provoked by cultural differences that could include but are not limited to mindset, behavior, practices, and style of communication. Cultural practices and traditions are sometimes difficult for travelers to comprehend because they are starkly different from his or her own upbringing. Conversely, expatriates, living for extended periods of time abroad, may begin to adopt the practices of the culture they reside in and identify with it more than the society in which he or she was born and raised. Upon returning home, these individuals may actually experience reverse culture shock.

The reading passage mentions culture shock, which is the discomfort experience by travelers who encounter different cultural practices from their own. What I found very interesting was how the professor examines culture shock from her own personal experience. One example was when she lived in Chile and no one showed up on time. This was very different from her own upbringing which taught her to always be punctual. For parties, even job interviews, everyone in Chile is expected to be late. Another time the professor experience culture shock was when she learned that very few people in Chile actually get married. Couples will live together for years and years, even raise a family together, without ever tying the knot. This was very surprising and different from her own culture. So, there you have it, culture shock is a very real thing experienced by travelers to new places with different cultures from their own.

The big problem is that the man needs to direct a short film for a school project outside but it’s raining. He really only has two alternatives. He could change the script and do the last scene inside. Or, he could wait for the weather to clear up and film as planned tomorrow. I feel the answer is obvious, he should definitely wait until tomorrow. As the man explains, this is the most critical scene of the film and it needs to be shot out-of-doors for it to make any sense. Surely there will be a break in the day where he can get the last scene done outside even if it means he has to spend the whole night editing. In the meantime, he could think of some ideas if, worst case scenario, the weather doesn’t clear up and he has to go indoors after all. For me it is a no brainer, he should wait to film until tomorrow for the sake of the project.
Speaking Task 6

The professor goes into a ton of detail about modernism. This is the trend from traditional forms of art that were based in realism, to a new and innovative form of art. One characteristic he discusses about the modern art movement is collage. This is a combination of painting with other materials like newspapers, photos or textiles. Really, anything can be added, as the professor gives the example of one modern artist who used a stuffed eagle, piece of fabric, picture of his son and an empty tube of paint in a piece of his work. A second characteristic of modernist art is the use of color. Instead of painting a scene the way it really looks, some modern artists exaggerate reality by using bold colors. For instance, Paul Cezanne was one of the first to use vivid colors in his paintings. This technique was later used by the famous Vincent Van Gogh. So, this is how the professor described the two characteristics of modernism.
