Part 1

1 Have you borrowed books from others?

Not even once because I don’t want to bother other people. I make sure to buy the books that I need in school. In case, I cannot find the books in a bookstore or in an online shop, I just usually go to a city library to check if there’s one in there and if I’m lucky to find, that’s the time that I borrow.

2 Is it good to borrow money from friends?

Well I don’t see any problem on borrowing money from friends as long as we keep our promise to pay them on time. As you know, money can usually break relationship, so as much as possible we have to avoid compromising our good relationship with our friends, and repay them on the exact date as we promise.

3 Do you like lending things to others?

Well it depends on what kinds of things people want to borrow from me. If they are just tiny things like books, shoes, clothes, things like those, without a second thought, I can lend those things. However, if it’s more valuable like car or jewelry, I never give in lending these precious things even to my closest friends because I’m afraid that they might damage or lose it.

4 What kind of housing/accommodation do you live in?

For the past 21 years I have lived in a house with my family. And I think if I can move out and start making a living on my own, I would try my best to have an independent place where I can plan and design a house layout to suit myself since sharing a room or a flat with strangers sounds so troublesome to me.

5 What do you usually do in your house/flat/room?

Well definitely I’ll spend some me-time there. I study, I chill out by reading, drawing and dancing all by myself. Sometimes I also invite one or two friends to spend time with. We’ll watch some movies together and tell each other endless stories.

6 Can you describe the place where you live?/ Please describe the room you live in

Briefly, my humble house locates in a small and quite street, so coming home to me is like all the craziness happened outside is left behind. Just beside my house stands a big old tree. I have my own room with walls painted violet, which is kinda a peaceful color. The air outside is fresh. I usually open the window to enjoy the wind and sunshine, which will help cool down my room without an air conditioner. Since I spend most of my time staying at home, my room means the whole world to me. It’s like a friend who is always there to share ups and downs with me. So yeah, I would always miss my house, my room whenever I’m away.

7 Which part of your home do you like the most?

It’s the dining room where my family spends our time together. Not only lunch or dinner but all our family reunions take place in the dining room where we can enjoy a harmonious atmosphere. We always try to keep the family dinner as something we cannot go a day without, since for us it’s the family bonding that lies behind.

Part 2: Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Talk about an advice you gave someone.
You should say:

What was it
Whom you advised
How you did it
And explain how you felt about it.

Sample Answer:

In our life, we often give advice to others in times when we feel that’s necessary. This is a basic human nature to give advice and share thoughts with others. I have given several pieces of advice to others, mostly to my friends and relatives, and one such advice I still remember and feel good about was the one that I gave to one of my classmates when I was in the college.

I advised him to continue his study no matter what. The friend whom I gave advice was (…say a name…) and I talked to him for more than 3 hours. He one day told me that he had been planning to quit the college and get involved in some kind of job to support his family. That was, in my opinion, a very wrong decision as it would ruin every possibility he has in his career and he would have to work on low-level jobs for the rest of his life.

I advised him not to drop out from the college and study hard. I showed him some of the examples where others are supporting their family even after continuing their study. I told him that it would be very tough and sometimes you would feel like abandoning the college but don’t even think of doing it. I also advised him to manage any part-time job in the local library or to talk to our teacher about his condition.

After few days, he told me that he had given some serious thought about it and won’t quit the college. I felt overwhelmed and happy to hear that. He talked to our course teachers and one of the teachers arranged him a part time job. He was happy and he finally finished his graduation from one of the prestigious universities of our country.

Now he is working in a respectable government office and he is still grateful to me for the advice I gave him. I felt very well when I found him continuing his study and in fact, he was a bright student. I still feel very glad to be able to give him an advice that proved to be very helpful for him.

 Part 3: ‘advice’ answers

1. Is it better to get advice from a friend or from a family member?

I think it depends on the kind of advice that you need. Parents and grandparents probably have more life experience than a friend, and so you might get a wiser or more sensible answer from them. On the other hand, friends are less likely to become too worried if you go to them with a problem. For example, I probably wouldn’t want to burden my parents with a financial problem.

2. What would you say are the characteristics of a good adviser?

Well, firstly, a good adviser should be a good listener, someone who takes the time to understand the situation before offering advice. Secondly, an adviser should try to be objective, and avoid judging the person who is seeking help. Finally, I think the best advisers have the ability to ask the right questions and encourage others to find their own answers.

3. Should people make their own work and career decisions, or is it a good idea to ask for advice about this?

I’d say that it’s a mixture of both things. Most of us talk to family, friends, teachers or colleagues before we make career choices. However, I believe that the final decision should rest with the individual; we all need to take ultimate responsibility for the big life choices that we make.
